Dice-Rolls in Role-Playing Games

چکیده

Most RPGs (role-playing games) use some sort of randomizer when resolving actions. Most often dice are used for this, but a few games use cards, rock-paper-scissors or other means of randomization. There are dozens of different ways dice have been used in RPGs, and we are likely to see many more in the future. This is not an evolution from bad methods to better methods – there is no such thing as a perfect dice-roll system suitable for all games (though there are methods that are suitable for none). But how will a designer be able to decide which of the existing dice-roll method is best suited for his game, or when to invent his own? There is no recipe for doing this – it is in many ways an art. But like any art, there is an element of craft involved. This paper will attempt to provide some tools and observations that, hopefully, will give the reader some tools for the craftsmanship involved in the art of choosing or designing dice-roll mechanisms for RPGs. Parts of this document have been published as a column called “Roll the Bones” on https://www. rpg.net.

MATHEMATICAL MODELLING FOR DICE FINDER GAME PROBLEM

Play is often episodic and mission-centric, with a series of challenges culminating in a final puzzle or enemy that must be overcome. Multiple missions played with the same characters may be related to each other in a plot arc of escalating challenges. The exact tone, structure, pace and end (if any) vary from game to game depending on the needs and preferences of the players, as in [9]. "THE C...

Roll : A Language for Specifying Die-Rolls

Role-playing games (RPG’s) use a variety of methods for rolling dice to add randomness to the game. In the simplest form, a small number of identical dice are rolled and added, but more advanced forms involve cumulative re-rolling of 6’s, doubling the value of doubles, removing the lowest or highest result or counting the number of dice that are below a threshold, and many other weird and wonde...

Optimal minimax strategy in a dice game

Each of two players, by turns, rolls a dice several times accumulating the successive scores until he decides to stop, or he rolls an ace. When stopping, the accumulated turn score is added to the player account and the dice is given to his opponent. If he rolls an ace, the dice is given to the opponent without adding any point. In this paper we formulate this game in the framework of competiti...

1.1. Example: A Dice-Rolling Problem. In board games like Monopoly, Clue, Parcheesi, and so on, players take turns rolling a pair of dice and then moving tokens on a board according to rules that depend on the dice rolls. The rules of these games are all somewhat complicated, but in most of the games, in most circumstances, the number of spaces a player moves his/her token is the sum of the num...
